In fact, she believes that the role of expat spouses in the relocation success cannot be ignored. Since the rise of globalization in the early 80s, “trailing spouses” have been playing a major role in organizations’ and multinationals’ expansion overseas. They are most often the ones taking care of all the transition and settling aspects in the new location so that the expat employee can focus on being right away operational at work. Trailing spouses have also often been instrumental in helping expat assignees socialize in the new country and develop an interesting professional network.

However, that has been at the cost of these spouses’ own source of financial freedom and professional fulfillment, despite the fact that they are nowadays highly educated and qualified. It is indeed very challenging to grow a stable and sustainable career on the move.
Not having the right to work or the right to a work visa in the foreign country is for instance one of the major barriers that expat spouses and diplomatic spouses have to face.

On the other side, Amel Derragui also noticed how difficult it has become these days for multinational companies and international organizations to send the right candidates to the right assignment abroad, one of the main reason being the career of their spouses. The other big issue for these expanding businesses and government agencies abroad is the high costs of failed expat assignments due to family reasons or the spouses’ dissatisfaction with their career and life challenges in the new location abroad.

Based on these observations and Amel Derragui’s passion to empower expat spouses on the move, six years after running her own consulting business as an expat spouse herself, she decided to launch Tandem Nomads.
Tandem Nomads is a podcast show and entrepreneurship platform designed to help expat partners and global nomads build a successful portable business thanks to various online resources and training programs.
